Understanding the Scriptures
Daily Devo: May 11, 2026
Psalm 119:18 ~ Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.
Understanding the Scriptures begins with a humble prayer: “Lord, open my eyes.” This verse reminds you that spiritual understanding does not come from your own intelligence but from God helping you see the truth in His Word. When you read the Bible with a teachable heart, God gives clarity, wisdom, and insight. He shows you what is right, what is wrong, and how to walk in His ways. (Proverbs 2:6 / Psalm 119:130)
Learning God’s Word takes daily effort. It means slowing down, reading carefully, and paying attention to what God actually says, not what you or others assume that He says. One of the best ways to understand Scripture is to compare Scripture with Scripture. The Bible is the best commentary on the Bible. When one verse seems unclear, another verse often brings light. This keeps us from confusion and helps us build a strong foundation of truth. (2 Timothy 2:15 / Isaiah 28:10 / 1 Corinthians 2:13)
As you read, ask simple questions: What does the verse say? What does it mean? How should I live it? Over time, your knowledge becomes steady and dependable. You begin to recognize God’s voice, understand His promises, and grow in spiritual maturity. The more you study, the more confident you become in what you believe. God’s Word becomes your anchor, your guide, and your source of strength. (Proverbs 4:7 / Hebrews 5:14 / Psalm 119:105)
A clear example of understanding Scripture comes from the Bereans in Acts 17. They listened to Paul’s preaching, but they did not stop there. They searched the Scriptures daily to see if what he said was true. They compared Scripture with Scripture, and because of that, their faith became strong and well‑grounded. Another example is Daniel. Even in a foreign land, he understood God’s Word because he read it, believed it, and applied it. These examples show that spiritual understanding grows when you take God’s Word seriously and study it with an open heart. (Acts 17:11 / Daniel 9:2 / Psalm 119:2)
As a Christian today you will hear a multitude of voices, opinions, and teachings. That is why understanding the Scriptures is more important than ever. When you read the Bible daily and let it interpret itself, you gain clarity in a confusing world. God’s Word helps you make wise choices, resist false ideas, and stay grounded in truth. It strengthens your faith and shapes your character. This week, choose one chapter of the Bible and read it every day. Compare its verses with other passages. Ask God to open your eyes and write down one truth He reveals to you. Let His Word guide your steps. (Psalm 119:105 / 1 John 4:1 / Joshua 1:8)
