Genesis 7:19-22 ~ And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard: And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness. And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
This event took place sometime after the flood had occurred. We know this because Ham had four sons of whom the youngest was named Canaan. The wine which Noah drank was made into an intoxicating beverage. But not all wine that comes from the vineyard is intoxicating. Wine that comes from the vineyard can be fermented and made into an intoxicating beverage, but there must be certain elements present and certain conditions have to be met. But wine can also be the fresh juice of the grape that comes from the vineyard and is not intoxicating. It is similar to the 100% grape juice that we buy at the grocery store. (Gen 10:6)
Unregenerate man will always find himself falling to the temptations of the flesh. Here we see that the unregenerate sin nature that was inherited from Adam comes out in not only Noah, who drank himself into a drunken coma, but also in his son Ham and his youngest son (grandson), Canaan. As we look at this family we see how they, being the ones who had found grace in the eyes of the LORD, are found to be helpless to the old sin nature. If you read very carefully you will see that it was Canaan who had done something to Noah while he was asleep (v. 24). Ham was not the youngest son of Noah, he was the middle son. But in ancient times grandchildren were referred to as sons and daughters of grandparents. Therefore “his younger son” would have been Canaan. However, Ham did jest over the fact that his father was passed out naked and drunk.
The point is that the sin nature is prevalent in the generations of Adam that had been protected and preserved through the flood. The unregenerate man is a slave in the bondage of sin. He is helpless to overcome the temptations without divine help and power. As we look at this let us be grateful for the saving grace of God in Jesus Christ our Lord. He has saved us to the uttermost and has given us the power within to overcome the old sin nature. We are regenerate, which means that God has breathed new life into us. God has given us a new nature within that has a whole new set of desires that will cause us to follow His leading. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” We have the Holy Spirit to keep us from the temptations that so easily beset so many. We have God’s Holy Word to guide us and direct us and to steer us from the temptation. We have His promise that we will never be tempted above that which we are able to withstand, and He promised that with every temptation there will be a way of escape.
We have much to be excited about in this day in which we live. Under the New Covenant we have the divine power of Almighty God, our Father, to save us, seal us, and to keep us all the way until the end. And at the end we will shed this old flesh weakened body and put on the incorruptible, immortal, glorified, and eternal body. Knowing that God loved us enough to do all of this for us, how can we not love Him? How can we not give Him our all? Does He not deserve your very best knowing that He has given His very best for YOU? (Php 1:6 / 1 Pt 1:5 / 1 Jn 5:13)
